Every five minutes another Australian is diagnosed with cancer. That’s 288 people that will be diagnosed today. Let’s make today the day, anyone diagnosed with this disease, knows they will survive it.

Each year the Sutherland Shire hosts the Relay For Life, giving the community the chance to actively take part in raising funds and awareness for the Cancer Council.

Brent Collier, of Peak Health in Gymea Bay has participated in Relay for Life for the past five years. This year in addition to taking part in the Relay, he decided to start his own relay, with his first successful event in February last year.

Based on the Rely for Life concept, Short-Circuit Cancer will see the Sutherland Shire mountain biking community, along with family, friends, corporate and other social teams hitting the Royal National Park trails for six-hours of tag team riding to raise funds – with a target of $10,000.

‘The idea came after about 42km of running around the Sylvania Waters Athletic track,’ says Brent. ‘I’m not really a runner, so at about the marathon mark, I was thinking to myself how much fun I would be having if I was riding my mountain bike out in the Nasho.’

‘It grew from there really, I spoke to a few friends who ride and thought it was a great idea. I spoke to National Parks and Wildlife who were supportive, and all of a sudden, we’ve got a fundraising ride.’

On Saturday 18 February 2012, the Royal National Park, will host the second mountain bike relay.
